2008 oil of the Month: Organic Sweet Basil
 
Here at NHR we are privileged to experiment with a huge range of organic oils and experience their aroma, vibrancy and therapeutic effects at any given moment. We are able to explore which oils are appropriate for us as individuals and also at certain times in our lives as our circumstances change or as we embrace another seasonal shift.
We would like to share some of our knowledge with you and so each month will 'introduce' an oil to our customers exploring some of the benefits. We would like to feature 'Organic Sweet Basil' (ocimum basilicum).
Native to tropical parts of Asia and Africa, the basil herb is now widely grown through France, Italy, Egypt, Bulgaria and the U.S. It is a highly aromatic plant annually producing pink/white flowers and a dark green stem from which the oil is steam distilled. This pale yellow extraction blends well with other oils, particularly those with 'green tones'.
As well as being a popular culinary ingredient, basil essential oil is used for it's therapeutic qualities which are broad and varied. Within the Ayurvedic tradition it is considered crucial for the respiratory system and in the realms of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a fortifying tonic for stomach and kidney complaints.
The oil is considered to have psychological and emotional properties too: it is deemed a useful study aid, reviving flagging spirits and a tired mind while enhancing direction and purpose in ones thinking.
Basil Essential oil is best avoided during pregnancy.
